Magnetscape 7.0

Magnetscape is a measurement application designed to visualize and analyze magnetic fields using the built-in magnetic sensor of the iPhone. It captures the often invisible magnetic environment surrounding the device, providing real-time data that can be useful in various practical contexts.

The app accounts for the presence of diverse magnetic sources in our environment, including electrical motors, compressors, metallic objects, and the Earth's natural magnetic field. Its capabilities include monitoring static magnetic fields, identifying low electromagnetic areas, and detecting metallic objects through magnetic sensing.

Magnetscape offers three distinct measurement modes tailored to different investigative needs:

• Scope: Provides a graphical representation of magnetic field magnitude and direction. The display features circles whose size and color encode the magnetic flux density. The position of these circles shifts in response to magnetic polarity: aligning with the North pole when facing similar to the geomagnetic field, or reversing away if opposite. In absence of nearby magnetic or metallic interference, the display aligns with Earth's magnetic North.
• Time: Tracks raw sensor data alongside corrected values over time, presenting a multi-axis displacement graph for Bx, By, Bz, and the combined magnetic flux density (Bcomp). The timeline spans up to 180 seconds, facilitating detailed temporal analysis.
• FFT: Performs frequency domain analysis on magnetic flux variations. The Fast Fourier Transform output displays frequencies ranging from 1 to 16 Hz (with 0.5 Hz increments) and their relative strengths in decibels, referenced against a standard value of 45 μT.

The application incorporates several notable features:

• Graphical visualization of magnetic fields from sensor data (Scope mode)
• Temporal displacement graphs for dynamic field monitoring (Time mode)
• Frequency analysis through FFT (FFT mode)
• Three-axis magnetic field measurement: X (rightward), Y (upward), Z (vertical). The composite field (Bcomp) integrates all axes for overall strength assessment.
• Sampling rate set at 32 Hz with observations measured in microTesla (μT)
• Measurement duration limited to three minutes per session
• An alert system triggers warnings when combined magnetic flux density exceeds 300 μT
• Optional audible alerts (sound on/off)
• Peak hold feature available in FFT mode
• Display of angle orientation in Scope mode
• Clock overlay in Scope mode for timestamping measurements

Please note that Magnetscape displays unprocessed raw data directly from the sensor without filtering or additional processing. As with all sensitive magnetic sensors, prolonged exposure to strong magnets or intense magnetic fields may temporarily disrupt reference calibration. In such cases, restarting the app or performing electronic compass calibration can help restore accurate readings.
